In search of my perfect loaf

Watching Tom Herbert on BBC4′s “In Search of the Perfect Loaf” tonight sent me heading for the fridge to dig out the sourdough starter that has been lurking in the back for some time. I started it back in February and it has been the basis of a few loaves already, but has been untouched for a couple of months. According to Andrew Whitley when I attended his breadmaking course last year, a sourdough starter should last for ages in the fridge without any feeding, so this is a bit of an experiment to see how true this is for mine.

It smells amazing, if rather like a brewery! I will follow it’s progress in future posts.

Back to Tom Herbert, I cannot help but be inspired by his passion and commitment to real bread. I have been following him on Twitter @Tom_Herbert_, along with Birmingham baker Tom Baker @LoafOnline for some time now – their enthusiasm is infectious and, damn, they make breadmaking sexy!
