About

I love my family, my friends and food is how I express that love.

For the past five years, I have been on an extraordinary personal journey which started with a need to lose weight (four stone to be precise) and saw me ditch the diets and learn to love food for what it is. That healthy eating has nothing to do with denial seems stating the bleeding obvious to me now, but back then my relationship with food was messy.

My journey has taken me from “I just want to be thin again” to the realisation that food matters, and that it’s a social, political and environmental issue. Caring about where your food has come from and how it is made is not just a question of health, it is right at the heart of issues relating to self-sufficiency, sustainability and ethical living. I have been inspired along the way by Michael Pollan (his book “In Defence of Food” is essential reading), Andrew Witley (founder of the Village Bakery in Cumbria and writer of “Bread Matters“), amongst others, and latterly The Real Bread Campaign and the Children’s Food Campaign.

Whilst I have come a long way on my food odyssey, eating ethically and sustainably isn’t always easy. It takes time and commitment and there are daily dilemmas – sourcing local and ethical food can be very hard in UK towns and understanding the environmental impact of my choices is constant challenge.

I am still no expert and each day is a new learning experience. This blog documents the food that I prepare and share, and charts my love affair with good food that is sustainable, ethical and godamn tasty!
